Complete Guide to Where Every Team Will Play at FIFA World Cup 2026
Match cities, stadiums and possible knockout venues for all 48 teams

The FIFA World Cup 2026 isn’t just another tournament — it’s set to be the biggest edition ever. For the first time, the competition will expand to 48 teams playing across 16 host cities in three countries: Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
With a record 104 matches packed into one summer, the scale of travel and planning will be just as big as the action on the pitch. Whether you’re planning to follow your team across multiple cities or simply want to experience the atmosphere in a host city, knowing where teams will play is key. From managing long travel distances to booking accommodation before prices surge, planning ahead can make a huge difference.
This guide brings together match locations, host cities, and possible knockout paths for every team so you can decide where to stay, plan your itinerary, and stay one step ahead of the crowds.
Match locations and knockout paths shown here are projections based on expected group finishing positions and tournament structure, with final venues confirmed after group standings and playoff teams are finalized, and this guide will be updated accordingly.

How Knockout Qualification Works
A total of 32 teams move on from the group stage to the knockout rounds. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically qualify, giving us 24 teams. The remaining eight spots are filled by the best third-place teams across all groups.
To decide which third-place teams advance, FIFA ranks them based on points earned in the group stage, followed by goal difference, goals scored, and fair play record if needed. If teams are still tied, a draw determines the final spot.
The knockout bracket is predetermined, meaning each team’s path to the final is already mapped out once they are placed in a group. This helps reduce travel by keeping teams within certain regions during the early rounds. The top seeded teams are also placed in separate parts of the bracket so they can only meet in the later stages if they keep winning.
For group winners, their Round of 32 opponent could be either a runner-up or one of the qualifying third-place teams. The exact matchup depends on which groups the advancing third-place teams come from, following FIFA’s preset combinations to avoid immediate rematches.

Travel Planning Tips for Following Your Team
1. Plan Your Budget Early
Following your team across cities can get expensive fast, especially if they make a deep run. Setting a rough budget early helps you decide how many matches to attend and where to spend. If you need help estimating costs, see our guide on how to plan your FIFA trip on a budget.
2. Check Visa Requirements Early
Visa rules can vary depending on your passport and which host countries you’ll visit. Apply as early as possible so you’re ready to travel if your team advances. Our FIFA World Cup visa guide explains timelines and requirements.
3. Be Smart with Knockout Bookings
It’s usually best to wait until group standings are confirmed before booking non-refundable hotels for knockout matches. A different group finish can send your team to a completely different city, so staying flexible can save money.
4. Choose Your Base City Carefully
If your team plays in multiple locations, staying in a well-connected city can make travel much easier. Look for places with strong flight or train links, and compare options using our host city guides.
5. Stay Flexible
Knockout venues depend on results, so flexible flights and refundable hotels give you room to adjust plans as the tournament unfolds.
6. Pack Smart
You’ll likely deal with different climates and plenty of travel days, so pack light and practical. Our what to pack for your FIFA trip checklist covers the essentials.
Frequently Asked Questions About FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Locations
Where will teams play their group stage matches at World Cup 2026?
Teams will play group stage matches across host cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Locations were determined during the official draw in December 2025, which assigned each team to a specific group and city schedule.
How are knockout match locations decided?
Knockout venues are predetermined based on finishing positions in each group. Once the group stage ends, teams follow a fixed bracket that determines which cities they play in next.
Can teams play in multiple countries during the tournament?
Yes. Because the tournament is co-hosted, teams may travel between the US, Mexico, and Canada, especially if they advance to the knockout rounds where the bracket can move teams across borders.
When will the full list of 48 teams be finalized?
The final six teams will be decided during the playoff window from March 26 to March 31, 2026. Four teams will qualify through the UEFA playoffs, while the final two spots will be decided in the intercontinental playoffs held in Mexico.
When will the Round of 32 matchups be finalized?
Round of 32 matchups will be confirmed after the group stage concludes on June 27, when final standings determine which teams advance and where they are placed in the knockout bracket. For the latest confirmed fixtures and updates, you can check the official FIFA match schedule on the FIFA website.
How do the best third-place teams qualify?
With 12 groups, the eight third-place teams with the best records advance to the Round of 32. Rankings are based on points, goal difference, and goals scored, which adds extra importance to the final group matches.
